Abstract

This study explores the experiences of parents of individuals with developmental disabilities during their children's transition to adulthood, considering diverse factors such as disability severity, regional differences, and significant life events. To account for the diverse characteristics of developmental disabilities, Yin’s multiple case study methodology was employed. The findings, analyzed through both life-cycle and life-course perspectives, reveal that developmental tasks in early adulthood are perceived not only as individual milestones for the children to achieve but also as tasks that necessitate robust social support. Furthermore, the results indicate that parents of individuals with developmental disabilities view the transition period through a life-course perspective, which emphasizes the diversity of life trajectories and the continuous interaction between the individual and their environment. This study also examines the specific roles performed by parents during this critical transitional phase. Parents of person with profound disabilities went to the ends of the earth to search of welfare services; parents of those with mild disabilities became intermediaries facilitating communication with society; parents of person who had experienced abuse or legal issues became steadfast sources of support, enduring hardship alongside their children; parents of those who achieved independent living hoped their children’s paths would serve as guidance for others; and parents residing in rural or underserved areas built mutually dependent relationships with their adult children to support their transition to adulthood despite welfare scarcity. Though their circumstances appeared different on the surface, all these parents shared a common role during their children’s transition to adulthood: they acted as bridges connecting their adult children to society, striving to ensure that their adult children could be respected and live as adults. Based on these findings, several implications and suggestions are discussed.
