Abstract
This study aims to analyze the abuse experiences, recovery processes, and independent living practices of individuals with intellectual disabilities who have been subjected to abuse, and to explore the policy and practice measures necessary to support their independent living within the community. The study involved four individuals with intellectual disabilities who had been separated from their abusers and maintained independent living during their recovery, as well as four professionals experienced in supporting abused persons with disabilities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the victims and focus group interviews (FGIs) with the professionals, the latter serving to complement the victims’ narratives and provide additional bases for recommendations. The data were analyzed both within and across cases, leading to the identification of three overarching themes: (1) “the paradoxical coexistence of care and violence,” (2) “reconstructing life in unfamiliar safety,” and (3) “the sweetness of freedom and the bitterness of solitude.” The findings suggest that the persistence and recurrence of disability abuse are attributable not only to vulnerabilities associated with disability, but also to dependency-based living arrangements and violent or threatening environments. Moreover, separating victims from abusers and providing independent living support that fosters self-determination were identified as critical strategies for breaking the cycle of abuse and facilitating recovery. Based on these findings, this study proposes policy and practical measures to promote community-based independent living for individuals with intellectual disabilities who have experienced abuse.
