Abstract
This study investigated how the self-esteem of migrant adolescents and their mothers affects their own and each other’s acculturative stress, aiming to explore the educational implications of emotional interdependence within migrant families. Data were drawn from the 4th wave (2022) of the 2nd Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS), and the analytic sample consisted of 294 dyads of migrant adolescents-defined as foreign-born or foreign-national youth who immigrated to Korea after spending a portion of their childhood abroad-and their mothers. The Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was tested using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 27.0 with structural equation modeling. The findings revealed significant actor effects for both adolescents and mothers: higher self-esteem was associated with lower levels of one’s own acculturative stress. A significant partner effect was observed only for mothers, whose self-esteem negatively influenced their children’s acculturative stress. However, adolescents’ self-esteem did not significantly affect their mothers’ acculturative stress. These results underscore the protective role of maternal emotional resources in the acculturation process of migrant youth. Based on these findings, the study recommends that educational and psychosocial interventions for migrant adolescents adopt a family-based approach beyond the individual level.
