Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of disability acceptance on life satisfaction among individuals with mental disorders, with a particular focus on the sequential mediating roles of family health and emotional support. For this purpose, data were drawn from 263 respondents with mental disorders who participated in the 5th wave of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (2022), conducted by the Korea Disabled People’s Development Institute. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0 and Hayes’ PROCESS Macro Model 6, including frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and verification of sequential mediation effects. The results revealed several key findings. First, disability acceptance had a direct positive effect on life satisfaction. Second, family health demonstrated a simple mediating effect in the relationship between disability acceptance and life satisfaction. Third, emotional support also served as a simple mediator in this relationship. Fourth, disability acceptance exerted an indirect effect on life satisfaction through the sequential mediating pathway of family health and emotional support, and all mediating effects were statistically significant within the 95% bootstrap confidence interval. These findings suggest that disability acceptance contributes to life satisfaction not only directly but also indirectly through family health and emotional support. Importantly, disability acceptance does not remain solely an individual psychological resource but interacts with family and social networks to enhance overall life satisfaction. This study underscores the necessity of psychosocial interventions that strengthen disability acceptance, family health, and emotional support to promote recovery and community integration for individuals with mental disorders. The findings provide empirical evidence and practical insights that can serve as a foundation for future policies and service development aimed at improving quality of life among this population.
