Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of stress-coping behaviors on the relation between perfectionism and somatization among children. The subjects were 510 fifth and sixth graders from elementary schools in Seoul. The Child and Adolescents Perfectionism Scale(CAPS), Korean Version of Children’s Somatization Inventory(K-CSI) and Children’s Coping Behavior Scale on daily life stress were administered to the students. The results were as follows: First, self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism had significantly a positive correlation with somatization. However, after demographic variables and stress-coping behaviors were controlled, self-oriented perfectionism was still correlated with somatization significantly but socially prescribed perfectionism was not. Second, there were significant two-way interactions, indicating that self-oriented perfectionism and aggressive coping behaviors interacted to predict somatization. Finally, based on the finding results, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
