이 연구는 초보상담자가 청소년내담자의 저항에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 개입하는가를 통해 상담과정 중 초보상담자의 심리적 경험에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 청소년을 대상으로 상담하고 있는 대표기관인 학교, Wee센터, 청소년상담복지센터 재직자 중 경력 1년 이상 3년 미만의 초보상담자 9명을 2011년 7월부터 9월까지 심층 인터뷰 하였다. 인터뷰자료에서 얻은 축어록을 연구자가 포함된 3명의 분석팀과 1명의 감사자가 합의적 질적 분석(Consensual Qualitative Research)방법을 이용해 분석한 결과, 10개의 영역과 54개의 범주가 도출 되었다. 초보상담자는 선입견을 갖지 않고 지금-여기에 충실하고자하는 마음으로 상담을 시작하며 청소년내담자가 상담 중 보이는 거부나 회피의 모습을 저항으로 인식하였고, 그로인해 정서적 반응과 함께 전문적 자질에 대한 회의를 경험하였다. 구체적인 개입행동은 청소년내담자를 상담에 참여시키기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌으며 초보상담자의 개인적 특성이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 초보상담자는 자신의 개입행동이 청소년내담자의 저항을 완화시켰다고 인식하였고, 청소년내담자의 반응을 자신의 능력과 연관 지어 인식하였다. 내담자의 저항은 조기종결의 부정적 결과만이 아니라 상담자와의 친밀감 및 신뢰감 형성에 도움을 주기도 하는 것으로 나타났고, 초보상담자가 재직하는 기관의 특성에 따른 차이가 있었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 초보상담자의 상담과정경험에 관해 기술하였고 추후연구에 대하여 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study was performed in order to explore how novice counselors experienced and responded to the resistance of their adolescent clients. Nine novice counselors, each of whom had had more than a year and less than 3 years of counseling experience in a counseling institution targeting adolescent clients, were interviewed in depth between July and September in 2011. The statements from the interviews were analyzed by an auditor and a research team comprising 3 researchers, using the consensual qualitative research (CQR) method, and creating data divided into 10 domains and 54 categories. The novice counselors started to counsel adolescent clients by dealing with and paying attention to the attitude of the clients in the ‘here-and-now.’ The novice counselors recognized the denial of counseling and prolonged silences during the process of counseling as forms of resistance. The clients’ resistance made the novice counselor feel skeptical of their professional capability. The novice counselors carried out actions of intervention to encourage clients to participate in counseling and to depend on the counselor’s character. Novice counselors recognized that their intervening behavior improved the resistant attitude of the adolescent clients, and the client’s reaction was associated with the counselors’ efficacy in counseling. One negative effect of clients’ resistance was an early end of counseling. However in some instances it had a positive aspect that was helpful to creating a sense of closeness between counselor and a client. This phenomenon depended on the character of the institution where the novice counselor had been engaged. Finally, study implications and limitations are discussed.
