Abstract

The relation between children’s biological stress levels at encoding and/or at retrieval and children’s remembering of a potentially stressful event was explored. Children (N=42) aged from 4 to 6 years, who undergone a minor dental operative procedure participated. Children’s blood pressure and pulse rates were monitored before and after a dental procedure. Also, children’s blood pressure and pulse rates were monitored before and after two memory assessments; one assessment being immediately after each child’s dental procedure and another one being a week later the procedure. Overall, the results of this study replicated and extended previous findings of related literatures, providing some further evidence for the negative relation between the level of stress and the accuracy of children’s remembering, in particular, children’s voluntary responses to general probes (i.e., free recall). More interestingly, however, the increased blood pressure and pulse rate at retrieval was strongly associated with higher false alarm - the proportion of ‘yes’ responses on absent feature questions- both at immediate and delayed interview regardless of the level of children’s stress at encoding. It suggests that children’s stress at encoding and/or retrieval have different effects on children’s remembering of a stressful event. Based on this result, significant implications for understanding some forensic issues in a legal setting concerning the ways in which to interview children who experienced a traumatic event were discussed.
