Abstract

The purpose of this study was to (1) classify the acculturation strategies and the acculturation expectation and to examine the difference of mental health among North Korean refugees, (2) explore the moderating effects of social stigma on the relationship between interactive acculturation and mental health. The subjects on this study were 367 North Korean refugees aged from 20 to 60 residing in Seoul, Kyung-gi, and Incheon. The finding are as follows. first, the acculturation cluster analysis revealed three clusters(identified as assimilation, oriented integration, marginalization). The depression and the anxiety level of ‘assimilation type’ was the lowest, whereas that of ‘North Korea oriented integration type’ was the highest. Second, the acculturation expectation cluster analysis revealed four clusters(identified as assimilation expectation, partial assimilation expectation, separation expectation, marginalization expectation). The depression and the anxiety level of ‘assimilation expectation’ was the lowest, whereas that of ‘separation expectation’ was the highest. Third, as a result of examining the difference in mental health depended on the type of interactive acculturation, the depression and anxiety level of 'consensual type' were the lowest. Fourth, the social stigma was revealed to be a significant moderator variable between interactive acculturation and mental health. Based on the results, we discussed for the importance of social stigma contributing in the mental health intervention of North Korean refugees.
