Abstract
This study explored the mediating effects of post-event rumination, interpersonal emotion regulation, and emotion dysregulation on the relationship between maladaptive self-focus and social anxiety in college students. Data were collected from 377 Korean college students and the mediating effects were analyzed. Structural equation modeling was used for data analysis, and the results showed that the proposed research model was a good fit for the data. The individual mediating effects of the variables were also found to be significant. A significant negative path was observed only in the direct route from interpersonal emotion regulation to social anxiety, while the other variables showed significant positive paths with each other. Furthermore, the results of the mediation analysis revealed that post-event rumination and interpersonal emotion regulation each sequentially mediated the relationship between maladaptive self-focused attention and social anxiety through emotion dysregulation. The total mediating effect of the model was also found to be significant. These findings are significant in that they provide an integrated understanding of how a negative self-evaluation in social situations is linked to difficulties in emotion regulation and social anxiety through an individual's cognitive and emotion regulation strategies. Based on these results, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
