Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the components of coping strategies for employment stress among job seekers and develop a scale to measure them, thereby validating their reliability and validity. To this end, the research analyzed previous studies and conducted in-depth interviews with 12 job seekers, as well as an open-ended survey with 50 participants, resulting in the identification of 17 sub-factors and 152 preliminary items. Then, two Delphi surveys were conducted with eight experts to revise and refine the sub-factors and items, ensuring content validity for the 98 final items. In the first survey, a questionnaire was administered to 350 job seekers to review the item distribution and item-total correlation coefficients. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to develop a final scale consisting of seven sub-factors (self-exploration, positive self-image, compromise on employment goals, self-management, employment planning and focus, seeking emotional comfort, and seeking help from experts and the community), each comprising 31 items. To establish the construct validity of the developed scale, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on 400 job seekers in the second survey, verifying that the three higher-order factors—cognitive, behavioral, and social relationship strategies—could be generalized into a higher-order factor model through the seven sub-factors. In addition, criterion-related validity was established through correlation analysis with the Stress Coping Strategies Evaluation, Career Decision Self-Efficacy, and Employment Anxiety scales. It is expected that the developed scale will be useful in understanding the stress coping patterns encountered by job seekers in the job preparation process and in designing effective support strategies.
