Abstract

The purpose of this study is to categorize and identify the characteristics of the difficulties experienced by youth counselors in parent counseling using the Q-methodology. To achieve this, 57 Q-samples were selected from a Q-population of 577 items, and 30 youth counselors were chosen as the P-sample to perform the Q-sorting. Q-factors were analyzed using the QUANL PC program, and based on post-interview results, four perception types were identified. Type I, the “Discouraged by Realistic Limitations” type, reflects counselors who feel distressed when parent or child counseling cannot be sustained due to specific practical or psychological circumstances of the parents. They express frustration with the limitations of counseling when unable to intervene in real-life problems. Type II, the “Lack of Professional Confidence” type, includes counselors who experience psychological burdens or performance anxiety due to perceived distrust of their expertise by parents. This type is characterized by difficulties in setting boundaries with parents and having relatively less counseling experience. Type III, the “Criticism of Uncooperative Attitudes” type, involves counselors who struggle with parents’ uncooperative attitudes. They find it difficult to understand parental responses and often display a critical stance toward parents’ behaviors. Type IV, the “Discontent with Non-systematic Conditions” type, describes counselors who report challenges in implementing structured interventions and frustration over the lack of compensation for extended parent counseling sessions. They advocate for systems that can provide sufficient support to parents and ensure fair compensation for counselors. The study discussed these key findings and the significance and limitations of the research were suggested.
