Abstract
This article is a philosophical comparison between the two approaches that look at the virtue of human, that is, the position of Lickona and Yulok. As a comparison framework, I used the main areas of philosophy by the ontology, epistemology, and axiology. Lickona’s approach is character education, which is a structure that knows virtues, desires virtues, and practices virtues. On the contrary Yulgok is basic framework of self-cultivation paradigm, and it emphasizes the keeping of the moral mind and return of the moral mind from the human mind designed by diagram of the human mind and the moral mind. Because of these differences, Lickona is the core of the point of fostering democratic citizens. As the result, Lickona is a world of virtues-knowledge. Yulgok, on the other hand, emphasized sincerity as a core prescription of achieving sage as the unity of Heaven and Man. This difference is that Lickona and Yulgok foretell the breakup of epistemology. In the end, if Lickona has a weight on the development of citizenship, Yulgok is weighted on the self-cultivation that keeps the moral mind and returns the moral mind from the human mind. This accompanies differences of value. However, modern education accepts the practice of education according to Lickona’s theory. As a result, the cultural tradition of Neo-Confucianism, which emphasized self-cultivation, has disappeared in the practice of modern education. Thus, in this respect, Yulgok’s sincerity theory may be worth the revaluation as a counter-discourse that complements the limitations of Lickona’s theory.
