Abstract
This paper is intended to reveal the possibility that Damheonseo(『湛軒書』), the complete collection of Hong Dae-yong(洪大容), published by Sinjoseonsa in 1939, contains some suspicious letters. They are “A Letter to the Governor of Gyeongsang-Do”(「與嶺伯論瀟陽祠書)」, “A Letter to Jeong Goang-hyeon”(「與鄭光鉉書」), and “A Letter to Mr. Chae”(「與蔡生書」). First, the first letter must have been written by the governor of Mungyeong, but Hong had never worked as a government official in the area. Second, since both the first and second letters were written by one person, it is certain that Hong Dae-yong would not have written the second letter just like the first. Third, it is very likely that the second letter was also not written by Mr. Hong because the recipient(蔡生) of the second letter is the same person as Mr. Chae(蔡公) appearing in the first letter. If Hong Dae-yong had not written these three letters, how would they have been incorporated into Damheonseo? First of all, it is possible that the letters written by Hong Ryeok(洪櫟), Hong Dae-yong's father, are included incorrectly in the collection. The reason I think so is because he once served as a county governor of Mungyeong and shared the exclusive partisanship of Noron(老論) hardliners. The second thing to think about is the possibility that Hong Dae-yong wrote the letters instead of his father. In this case, it can be acknowledged that Hong Dae-yong wrote those letters, but there is still a question if they are truly his creations. Therefore, it is not appropriate to conclude that Hong Dae-yong maintained the exclusive partisanship of the Noron hard-liners in his youth based on those three letters.
