초록
This study aims to discuss Morrison’s criticism of materialistic desire in her novel, Love. In this novel, Morrison’s critical focus is on material desire which assumes the form of legacy-warring from a satirical perspective. However, she doesn’t allow the reader to criticize her characters’ vices or weaknesses; neither does she impose a moral code or try to demonstrate how these faults can be overcome—an amelioration which pervades most conventional satires. Morrison, on the other hand, evades setting a moral code and amelioration by blurring, doubling, and overlapping her characters’ oppositions of vice and virtue, good and evil, and right and wrong. Her goal is to create a literary experience of grotesque and irony that evokes contemplative and emotional pleasure by using a tragic-comic tone. (Jeonju University)
