초록
This study investigates how university students, with different levels of English proficiency, use and perceive ChatGPT as an English learning tool. It also examines its impact on various language skills and affective factors. A mixed-methods approach was used, with 102 students divided into high- and low-proficiency groups based on an English proficiency test. Findings indicate that high-proficiency students used ChatGPT more frequently, primarily for essay writing and reading analysis, while low-proficiency students focused on grammar and vocabulary practice. High-proficiency students rated ChatGPT as more effective for language learning and perceived more significant improvement in learning ability, confidence, and motivation, as well as in reading, writing, and grammar. However, no significant difference was found in listening, speaking, or translation. Students valued ChatGPT for grammar correction, instant feedback, and writing support, but noted limitations in accuracy, translation quality, feedback consistency, and speech functionality. These findings highlight the need for proficiency-based AI learning strategies and improvements in ChatGPT’s capabilities.
