초록

D. H. Lawrence shows an importance of the touch experiences of human beings, particularly between man and woman, in his short stories. He asserts modern man suffers from the death-in-life of half unrealized sensibility and lives a mechanical life without vitality. According to him, if a person is never awakened by unconscious desire or instinctive intuition, he or she remains cold and out of relationship with the world. Lawrence’s short stories such as “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter,” “You Touched Me,” and “Daughters of the Vicar” illustrate that the touch experience of body between man and woman is necessary to maintain a healthy, generative relationship. An irresistible force represents the powerful life-force in which human beings are able to encounter another new world and to revitalize themselves. In order to relieve from the crisis of the death-in-life in mechanical civilization, Lawrence advocated his faith of life-force throughout his short stories. When a direct sensuous contact comes to actual living, human beings can be saved from their dead-feeling through their instinct and intuition. The body gives us the immense power which can make us feel alive and embody our real selves. With the mystery power which is flowing through all the parts of vigorous body we can understand the genuine value of the lively existence. When we are aware of an irresistible force and follow the working of senses, it is possible to find our new selves and the natural urges which are oppressed by the conscious reason.

Abstract
