초록

This article attempts to illuminate the significance of “feeling” and “being” in the works of D. H. Lawrence with reference to some concepts addressed by theories of affect. Lawrence and Massumi seem to have such affinities as the impersonal, unfixed nature of feeling or affect; anti-Cartesianism; the emphasis on the relations and physicality. However, it is crucial to recognize how Lawrence differs from major philosophers of affect theories. Despite Deleuze’s high appraisal of Lawrence for his radical critique of psychoanalysis and Oedipus complex, in particular, there exist crucial differences between the two authors; the machine, the representative Deleuzian concept turns out to be incompatible with that of ‘life’, or ‘living beings’, the only creative reality in the Lawrencean thought. Also unique is Lawrence’s way of thinking in the Western tradition, which can be neither confined to monism, nor to dualism. My reading of “The Horse-Dealer’s Daughter” targets to prove the inevitability of the intervention of the whole consciousness of readers in responding to a literary work, while challenging the limits of conventional language and characters.
