초록

In Thomas Hardy’s stories, nature is an overwhelming blind power and tends to be adverse to human purposes or happiness. It is a usual practice that Hardy’s characters go to rural or wooded places hoping for spiritual refreshment under natural influence merely to fall victims to seemingly perverse natural power. In “The Fiddler of the Reels,” Ned, representing modern technology as a mechanic, returns to his rural homeland hoping for a fresh start after his interim life in London, but Ollamoor and Car’line, representing ‘nature,’ happen to work together in driving the mechanic to ruin. In “On the Western Circuit,” Charles Raye, standing for urban professionalism, attempts to make love with an innocent country lass, Anna, only to be caught in a trap contrived by her. In contrast to Hardy’s stories, D. H. Lawrentian characters make visits to natural space like wooded land or watering place, and they come to experience spiritual or sensual enhancement under natural influence. In “The Shades of Spring,” Syson visits a family leading a secluded sylvan life to meet his former sweet heart and his mind becomes fulfilled with emotional sublimation and reflective thoughts. In “Sun,” Juliet, the wife of a civilized businessman, having holidays and enjoying relaxation in mind and body at a serene sea resort, is able to recover her unison with the natural influence from the sun enough to recover vital sensuality while her life in New York was cut off from such natural effect.
