초록
Lawrence always wanted to believe in fresh starts in his life; and the recurrent metamorphoses of his psyche may strike the skeptical as forced or rhetorical. Yet he did find in the American Indians much that corresponded to his idea of health and wholeness that had existed in primitive men unwarped by the ideal consciousness; and in their religion he found sanity, the reverence for life, that exceeded anything he had ever encountered. The marvelous landscape of New Mexico made deep impression on him. He called it “the greatest experience from the outside world that I have ever had... it was New Mexico that liberated me from the present era of civilization, the great era of material and mechanical development.” Paying attention to the richness of Lawrence’s thoughts under the stimulus of this new experience, I trace Lawrence’s prolonged efforts to search for a positive alternative to the diseased life of Western civilization.
