스마트 기기와 각종 서비스의 보편화로 일상생활에서 디지털 문화지도의 활 용이 크게 증가했다. 마이크로소프트, 구글 등 굴지의 글로벌 기업들이 앞 다투 어 이 기술과 서비스에 뛰어들고 있다. 지도는 다양한 개인적 전유에 의한 민 주주의적 가능성을 내재하나, 막대한 기술력과 자본력에 의한 독점은 제국주의 나 글로벌라이제이션적 획일화 우려를 낳고 있다. 디지털 지도의 범람은 많은 이들의 이용을 독려하고 세계에 대한 이해를 도모하도록 돕는 민주주의 현상이 거나, 기술-자본 결합을 통한 양극화의 심화를 초래하는 독점자본주의적 폐해 라는 양극단의 가운데 위치한 셈이다. 이에 대한 반성이나 문제제기의 부족은 지도에 대한 우리의 인식이 절대적 공간 개념에 기반을 두고 있다는데 연유한 다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서 지도제작 발전 과정에서 보편성을 획득해 온 궤적을 추적하고, 글로벌라이제이션과 로컬의 대립 함의와 글로컬적 가능성을 탐색했다. 그 과정에서 최근 각광받는 컬처매핑을 대안으로 검토했다. 이를 통 해 풀뿌리적 문화생산 플랫폼으로서의 디지털 문화지도의 가능성을 고찰해 보 았다.
Abstract
Smart devices everywhere obviously allow us the frequent uses of the digital map services in our everyday lives. The technology based global agglomerations such as Microsoft and Google have moved quickly into this business. While pursuing the profit through the mapping and services for which they mobilize capital and technology, the essential possibilities of digital maps in terms of democracy of knowledge and technology seems to be in peril. It is significant to highlight that the recent phenomena in the digital map business field require debates on several issues: monopoly, globalization, and even imperialism. This article problematizes the notion of absolute space as the epistemology of map and space in this regard. The emerging concept of cultural mapping is scrutinized as an alternative to realize the ideal of production of culture in a grass-root way.
