본 논문은 바슐라르의 세 권의 ‘불’에 관한 저작들 간의 공통점과 차이점을 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 바슐라르의 시학에 있어서 불이란 원소는 그의 저작의 처음과 끝을 장식하고 있다. 그렇다면 이렇게 그의 저작의 처음과 끝을 장식하고 있는 ‘불’에 대해 바슐라르의 태도에는 변화가 없을까? 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘불의 이미지’에서 지속적으로 나타나는 특징은 무엇인가? 세권의 저작 속에 지속적으로 나타나는 ‘불의 이미지’의 특징은 수직성이며 양가성이다. 특히 불꽃의 양가성을 바슐라르는 프로메테우스 콤플렉스와 엠페도클레스 콤플렉스를 통해 설명하고 있으며, 그는 이를 시적 승화(昇華)를 대표적인 예로 들고 있다. 시적 승화의 효과는 정화(淨化)로 나타나며, 양가성부터 정화까지의 논의는 ‘자기 쇄신’(rénovation)으로 이어진다. 인간의 자기 쇄신이야말로 바슐라르가 상상력을 통해 말하고 하는 궁극적인 것이며, 인간 실존의 일반 원리이다. 이렇듯 바슐라르에게 있어 ‘불’의 이미지는, 물, 공기 등 다른 물질적 상상력에서도 마찬가지지만, 이미지 자체보다 이미지를 몽상하는 주체에 핵심이 있다. 단적으로 말해, 이미지와 상호작용하는 주체가 스스로를 쇄신하는데 바슐라르 상상력의 본질이 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to clarify the similarities and differences between the works of Bachelard's three books on “Fire”. In Bachelard's poetics, the element of ‘Fire’ is dressing up the beginning and end of his work. So, isn't there a change in Bachelatdr's attitude toward ‘Fire’, which is the beginning and the end of his work? And what are the characteristics that continue to appear in the image of fire? The characteristics that are continuously shown are the verticality of the ‘Fire’ can be summarized by the rise and fall of ‘Flame’. In particular, Bachelard explains the ambivalence of ‘Flames’ through the Prometheus complex and the Empedocles complex, which he describes as a typical example of poetic sublimation. The effect of poetic sublimation is manifested in purification, and the discussions from the ambivalence to purification lead to renovation. Human self-renewal is the ultimate thing Bachelard speaks through imagination and is the general principle of human existence. For Bachelard, the image of ‘Fire’ is the same in other material imaginations such as ‘Water’ and ‘Air’, but it is central to the subject who imagines the image rather than the image itself. In short, the subject that interacts with images renew himself, and this is the essence of Bachelard's imagination.
