Abstract

The objective of this paper is to reveal, on the ground of Heidegger’s poetics, the reasons why a poem is beautiful. This study consists in 3 questions, (1) what is the poetry for Heidegger, (2) what is the beauty, (3) what is the reason in itself. I will propose some Heideggerian answers for each question and reconstitute as a whole,Heideggerian stance on the reason why a poem is beautiful. Heidegger regards a poem as a kind of silence or secret of language. He says about a poem, in order not to break the poetic silence, but in order to reveal it as a silence. For Heidegger, the poetry is as a poiesis, an process consisted in the endless creation. That is why he was so careful, while he is dealing with poem. Poets can create many poems ceaselessly, because each has a unique poem, which he would like to write, but can not write forever. Poets can not reach to it finally. So Heidegger could understand a poem as ‘untouchable longing’, ‘wandering’, and ‘the temple of Being.’ And Heidegger treats the beauty as ‘light of Being.’ The beauty ascribes its origin neither to the objective canon nor to the subjective feeling. It begins with the ‘Event of Being(Ereignis)’. In brief, the beauty is a ripple effect of ‘Ereignis’. So Heidegger described it as ‘light’, ‘gift’ and ‘greeting of Being’, or as ‘a ineffable feeling’ and ‘uncanny fascination’ for us. Finally I will search for the reason why we ask for ‘the reason’ insistently. According to Heidegger, the concept of ‘reason(ratio)’ meant originally Being. But its meaning transforms into ‘the calculating reason’ which can forecast the future and control all things. This modern concept of ‘reason’ is nothing but a anthropocentric understanding of the Being. The ultimate reason of a being is the Being. And Being has no more reason. Therefore there is no reason why a poem is beautiful. If there were, we could say only that the poem ‘is’ beautiful. We can utter the reason of Being only by means of a tautology, because the tautology is the first clamour of the poetical silence.
