Abstract

This paper attempts to make a balanced understanding of Husserlian and Heidegerian phenomenology by finding both parallels in formal and differences in content that there are between the two. First, the parallels are that both Husserl's transcendental ego and Heidegger's Dasein (existential ego) are an unpsychological and nonmetaphysical transcendence with no inside and outside, in which the dichotomous opposition between the subject and the object is dissolved. Second, the differences are associated with the world. For Heidegger, the world is a characteristic of Dasein itself and thus is originally inseparable from Dasein; the world and Dasein belong in and depend on each other. Accordingly, Dasein finds itself in the world and depends on it for its own existence. For this reason, for Heidegger, the world is a condition for Dasein's self knowledge. Therefore, Heidegger rejects both a worldless (weltlos) transcendental ego and a phenomenological reduction that brackets the world in order to know or find it. Heidegger's phenomenology that rejects them is made if Dasein's existence (In der Welt Sein) is set as a substructure for philosophy. On the other hand, for Husserl, the transcendental ego does not depend on the world for its own existence. In this sense, it is worldless and is prior to the world. Therefore, for Husserl, the phenomenological reduction that parenthesizes (doubts) the world is a condition to find the transcendental ego. This reduction is necessarily required if philosophy sets Dasein's reason as its substructure and is faithful to the reason's epistemological idea of “the principle of an presuppositionlessness.” Ultimately, the differences between Husserl and Heidegger arise from those of reason and existence. Husserl claims that reason is prior to Dasein's existence and makes it possible; however, Heidegger claims the reverse is true.
