찰스 테일러의 철학은 어떻게 소개되어 왔는가? 테일러의 광범한 관심과 업적에도 불구하고, 테일러의 철학은 편중된 관점에서만, 특히 사회, 정치철학의 관점에서만 사료되고 있지 않은가? 이 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서부터 출발하였다. 그리하여 테일러의 철학에서 잘 다뤄지지 않은 부분들을 조망하려는 기획이 필요하다는 절감에서 시작되었다. 이 논문은 그 첫 번째 조망으로서 테일러의 현상학에 대해서 다루려고 했다. 다만 테일러의 현상학이 그의 근대인식론비판과 결코 분리될 수 없다는 점에서, 이 논문은 우선 테일러가 근대인식론을 어떻게 비판하고 있는지부터 사유해보았다. 테일러가 근대인식론의 핵심이라고 본 “매개론”과, 그리고 그 매개론에서 가장 문제기 되는 “이성의 유리” 혹은 “유리된 주체”에 어떠한 비판이 가해지는지, 그리고 어떠한 대안이 제시되고 있는지에 대해서 생각해보았다. 이 대안으로서 테일러가 “접촉이론” 혹은 “접촉의 현상학”을 제시하며, 후설, 하이데거, 특히 메를로-퐁티의 현상학에서 얻은 교훈들로부터 주체가 “관여”되어 있음을 주장하며, 근대인식론을 극복하고자 한다는 점을 중점적으로 다루어보았다. 이 논문은 이러한 점들을 보여주는 것에 주력했다.
Abstract
How to think about the philosophy of Charles Taylor? Despite his interest in vast fields and immense research, is his philosophy considered to be identical with his social and political philosophy? This thesis starts from this consideration; it starts from the necessity of bringing to light what has not yet been sufficiently concentrated in Taylorian philosophy. This thesis is the first project of this bringing to light. It aims to highlight Taylor's phenomenology. But we must not forget that his phenomenology is inseparable from his criticism of modern epistemology. This is the reason why first of all this thesis necessarily deals with this criticism. The essence of modern epistemology, which Taylor calls “mediationalism”, resides in “the disengagement of reason” or “the subjectivity of the disengaged subject”. Taylor criticizes this mediationalism and is tempted to go beyond it. Ultimately, Taylor offers the “contact theory” or contact phenomenology. For this, starting from the teaching of Husserl, Heidegger and in particular Merleau-Ponty, Taylor emphasizes “the engagement of the subject” and thereby goes beyond modern epistemology. This thesis tries to show it.
