Abstract
The present study examines Arendt's theory of Jewish Culture. Arendt’s ideas were introduced both at home and abroad, and focusing mainly on political theories. It is easy to overlook the existential anguish and hardships she had to go through as a Jew during the Nazi era. However, assuming an appreciation the 18 years she spent as a stateless Jew, it is possible to recognize that understanding life is as crucial as understanding texts such as The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition. Text is a reflection of life, and Jewish case of Arendt’s texts, either directly or indirectly. That is why the ‘cultural theory’ in her 「The Crisis of Culture」 needs to be reinterpreted as a “Jewish-cultural theory”. In the present study, we will attempt to explain why Arendt's cultural theory should not be overlooked by describing her activities at the <Committee Jewish Cultural Reconstruction> from 1947 to 1951. “Arendt’s ‘I’” means a Jew and the Jewish people. Judaism and Jewish cultural elements are not emphasized as noticeably signifiants in Arendt's texts, but always work as signifiés. In this respect, Arendt's (Jewish-)cultural theory paradoxically leans toward cultural relativism (Jewish-particularism). Although Arendt wanted to be a 'non-Jewish Jew' like F. Kafka, she did not escape the category of White Jews of the first world.
