Abstract

The contemporary mass consuming society wants “pleasure”, not “culture”. This is why Hannah Arendt brings the concept of “crisis” as a fundamental question of “what culture is”. According to “The Crisis in Culture” popular cultural content produces, so called, a recent trend to destroy the “cultura animi”, which can also become a “threat” to our society, now. This critical message is the reason why culture needs to aware of the specific differences of the private; the common; and the public goods from the consuming capital goods. In this study, the discussion of Arendt's cultural theory will be structured in a way that explains three questions as follows: i) Has modern society really advanced culturally?, ii) What is the value of the culture that is evoking us through the concept of “cultura animi”? and iii) Why should we protect and preserve the culture? With rising consumer capitalism, the public realm and public spaces are increasingly privatized and public values are reducing. However, today's consumer capitalism is so focused on “commodifying the world” and “globalizing commodities” that it homogenizes desires of the individuals. Arendt's enlightening cultural theory, precisely, questioned us “What is culture?” more than half a century ago and it is still alive in this falling-apart-societies.
