Abstract
This study explores how technological relationships constitute human intentionality and experience from a phenomenological perspective. Focusing on Robert Rosenberger’s Distracted: A Philosophy of Cars and Phones, this study analyzes the impact of smartphone use while driving on driving performance, proposing a philosophical alternative distinct from conventional cognitive science explanations. Drawing on Heidegger’s tool analysis and Don Ihde’s philosophy of technology as theoretical frameworks, it examines the phenomenon of immersion arising from human-technology relationships to argue that smartphone conversations and passenger dialogues possess fundamentally different experiential structures, resulting in distinct effects on drivers’ perceptual experiences. This research also suggests that phenomenological approaches to technology-mediated experiences can complement empirical scientific explanations and provide crucial insights for understanding the human experiential changes that accompany future technological developments.
