차라투스트라는 이렇게 말했다 제1부 6장 ｢창백한 범죄자에 대하여｣는 차라투스트라는 이렇게 말했다에서 가장 난해하면서도 매우 중요한 부분으로 꼽힌다. 이 부분에서 니체는 범죄자를 어떻게 볼 것이냐는 문제를 다루고 있지만 우리는 여기에서 범죄와 처벌에 대한 니체의 사상도 엿볼 수 있다. 여기서 문제가 되고 있는 ‘창백한 범죄자’는 강도질하다가 살인을 한 자다. 그는 죄의식에 사로잡혀 창백한 얼굴을 하고 있다. 재판관들은 범죄자가 강도질을 목적으로 살인을 저질렀다고 주장한다. 이에 반해 차라투스트라는 범죄자는 사실은 살인 그 자체를 목적으로 했으며, 살인을 통해 자신의 생명이 고양되는 것을 맛보고 싶어 했다고 본다. 범죄자는 자기를 고양하려고 했지만, 자신의 본능들과 열정들을 제대로 통합하는 방법을 알지 못하고 자신을 고양하는 방법으로 살인을 택한 데 문제가 있었던 것이다. 따라서 그는 재판관이 판단하는 것처럼 ‘죄인’, ‘악한’, ‘불량배’가 아니라 ‘바보’, 정신이 병들어 있는 ‘병자’다. 이 장은 차라투스트라는 이렇게 말했다의 다른 부분들에서처럼 매우 함축적으로 서술되어 있기 때문에 그 의미가 명료하지 않은 부분들이 많다. 따라서 어떤 문장이나 구절에 대해서는 학자들 사이에 서로 다른 해석이 존재한다. 본 연구는 이 해석들과 대결하면서 이 장을 처음부터 끝까지 수미 일관하면서도 명료하게 해석하는 것을 목표한다.
Abstract
Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Part I, Chapter 6, “On the Pale Criminal” is one of the most difficult and important sections in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In this chapter, Nietzsche addresses the question of how to view criminals, but we also get a glimpse of Nietzsche’s own ideas about crime and punishment. The “pale criminal” in question is a man who killed and robbed and who is now pale with guilt. The judges argue that the criminal committed murder for the purpose of robbery. On the contrary, Zarathustra believes that the criminal actually intended to kill for the sake of killing and that he wanted to enhance his life through killing. The criminal sought to enhance himself, but his problem was that he did not know how to properly integrate his instincts and passions and chose murder as a way to enhance himself. He is therefore not a “sinner,” “villain,” or “rogue,” as the judges insist, but a “fool,” a “sick man.” This chapter, like many others in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, is written in a highly allusive manner, so the meaning is not always clear, and scholars have differing interpretations of certain sentences and phrases. The present study aims to confront these interpretations and provide a coherent and clear interpretation of the chapter from beginning to end.
