Abstract
This article analyzes the meta-history of Jean-Clément Martin, a historian who represents the study of French revolutionary history in France today. Jean-Clément Martin emphasizes the banality and inevitability of violence, denies that the Vendée War, being violent, is Genocide, and argues that the reign of Terror has not only officially been on the agenda but also was not systematically implemented in the Robespierre regime. In this way, he describes the history of the French revolution with a logic that Robespierre tried to control and ease the rule of Terror. Jean-Clément Martin's meta-history appears to be trying to fend off attacks on the violence of the French Revolution within the frame of the jacobin interpretation, though he does not follow it dogmatically.
