Abstract
This essay aims at examining circumstances surrounding the introduction of 大藏經and the way in which 大藏經 was utilized in medieval Japan. In fifteenth century, Japanese traders strongly wished to import Buddhism textbooks, especially 大藏經, from Korea(Choson dynasty). This was a salient feature of the relationship between Korea and Japan in this period. While historical processes of the importation of 大藏經 have been rather minutely studied, manners in which Buddhism textbooks including 大藏經were accepted and how those textbooks actually functioned in Japanese society are yet to be further examined. Thus, first, this essay takes up examples of actual use of 大藏經 imported from Korea. In some example, 大藏經 was lend or borrowed amongst Buddhism temples in Kyoto, and in others, 大藏經 was ritualistically utilized in 法会(ecclesiastical meetings in Buddhism temples). Second, this essay examines the political motives of importation of 大藏經 by Japanese ruling classes and how they utilized 大藏經 for their own purpose, taking up the case of the Ouchis. In the first half of the fifteenth century, the Ouchis distributed 大藏經 to Buddhism temples in their domain as a means for consolidating their territorial rule. This might be characterized as the ‘inside-oriented’ use of 大藏經. As opposed to this, in the second half of the fifteenth century, the Ouchis demonstrated to the reigning family or temples in other parts of Japan the fact that they had accumulated 大藏經 and that they could still procure 大藏經 from Korea. This might be characterized as the ‘outside-oriented’ use of 大藏經.
