Abstract
The circulation of money between Choson Korea and Japan is one of the most important themes in the history of Korean-Japanese economic relations from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth century. The flow of money varied over time, but, in general, money moved from Choson to Japan until the early sixteenth century and from Japan into Choson from the mid-sixteenth century. For example, Korean copper money flowed into Japan by the early fifteenth century, and silver was exported from Choson into Japan by the early sixteenth century. But the pattern of money circulation changed after the 1530-1540s when Japanese silver began to enter Choson. During the fifty years from the mid-seventeenth century, Japanese silver money rushed into Korea. But those exports to Choson could not be sustained because of the Tokugawa Bakufu's controls on silver money. Eventually, the volume of Japanese silver money imports to Choson began to decline in the eighteenth century.
