조선 후기 대외 무역에 대한 조선 왕실의 무관심으로 무역 사료가 없기 때문에 이 시기 무역사 연구는 거의 찾기 힘들다. 이 연구는 처음 상평통보가 도입되는 시기인 1684~1710년 조선과 일본의 무역과 은의 이동을 살펴보고, 두 국가 간 은의 이동을 통한 일물일가의 법칙이 성립되는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 이 시기 유일한 무역자료인 일본의 대조선 무역창구였던 대마도 번주 가문의 자료를 현대적 수지개념에 맞추어 수정하여 사용하였다. 이 연구 결과에서 상평통보의 도입 시기 동전의 신뢰를 높이기 위한 조선의 동전가치 안정화정책과 전황은 물가를 낮게 유지하였고, 대일 무역수지는 은을 제외하면 지속적인 흑자를 보였다. 조선과 일본 간 국제결제자금으로 은의 이동이 이루어졌으며, 두 국가 간 미곡의 일물일가 법칙도 성립하였다. 이 연구의 의미는 초기 화폐 도입 시기 조선의 대일 무역수지와 은 이동을 화폐적 측면에서 살펴보고, 이를 통해 조선 후기 무역사 연구에 새로운 방향을 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper purposes to examine the effectiveness of Hume’s species flows mechanism under the disequilibrium economy of Chosun Korea in the period of 1684～1710, when the legal nominal money (Sangpyung Tongbo) were issued and circulated nationwide for the first time ever in Korea. The disequilibrium of economy presided all over commodity market, money market and the external balance of payment with Japan. The Korea government implemented the price stability policy for keeping the stable value of coin relative to silver and other commodities such as rice and fabrics. There was also nationwide the money shortage phenomenon due to the dependency of copper materials on limited import from Japan. These price policies caused deflation to be epidemic, resulting into the surplus of trade balance with Japan. In the long run, however, evidence shows that the law of one price holds between Korea and Japan. This experience of Chosun Korea does not reject against Hume’s theory, but rather supports it in the disequilibrium economy of Chosun Korea economy.
