Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the identity of Sangmanho(上萬戶), the leader of the Waegu(倭寇) who surrendered in December of the 5th year of Taejo's reign (1396) while commanding a large military force in Chuksan-do, Yeonghae. This investigation serves as a crucial clue in identifying the composition and reality of Waegu from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period. In the following year(1397), Sangmanho fled after capturing Uljugisa Lee Eun(李殷) and Yi Ye(李藝). According to Yi Ye's testimony, "In the December of of the Hongmu Byungja year(1396), Bigurogo(非舊老古) and others surrendered with 3,000 troops, but they later fled after taking Lee Eun and Yi Ye. The two were spared by Bigurogo and detained in Wadanoura(和田浦) on Tsushima." This indicates that Sangmanho and Bigurogo were the same person. The name Bigurogo came from 'Hikoroku(彦六),' which used to be traditionally inherited to the heir of the Sō clan(宗氏) in Tsushima, and the Hikoroku active in 1396 was identified as Sō Sadashige(宗貞茂). That is to say that Sangmanho = Hikoroku = Sō Sadashige. Additionally, the location of Wadanoura, where Yi Ye was detained, has traditionally been identified as Wanda-no-po at the entrance of Ni’i(仁位) in Haedong Jegukgi's 'Map of Tsushima.' Our investigation, however, suggests that Wadanoura is not in Ni'i-gun but rather in Oyama(大山), Yora-gun(与良郡), Kazuta-no-ura(和田ノ浦). In the Middle Ages, Oyama Hwajeonp(和田浦) is a place where it is connected to the family of the Sō clan. Shōsuke Murai, a specialist on the history of foreign relations in the Middle Ages in Japan, proposed the Waegu Boundary Persons Theory(倭寇境界人説), asserting that Waegu members were not only Japanese but also people from the coastal regions of the Korean Peninsula and China. This theory is based on the premise that Waegu were non-lordly inhabitants(非領主・住民) rather than feudal lords or samurai. However, the case of Sangmanho = Hikoroku, who is to become the 7th lord of Tsushima, contradicts Murai's theory. Therefore, Murai's theory should be reconsidered. By clarifying the identity of Sangmanho, whose title is explicitly recorded in historical sources as a leader of Waegu in early Joseon, this study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the composition of Waegu and the forces that led and influenced them during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
