Abstract
A Game at Chess has been interpreted as a topical phenomenon since its uproarious premiere in 1624. This paper examines how the play conveys uncovered meanings when read through symbols of disease. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the “body politic,” the idea of comparing the natural human body to the body of the commonwealth, was familiar in political, religious, and medical treatises. The discourse of the body and the body politic is usually accompanied by consideration of diseases. The play stresses the theme of Spanish corruption by conferring noticeable syphilitic symptoms upon the relevant characters. It also exposes the English court’s extravagance when it embodies the White Knight and the Duke on a chess-board as figures of gluttony. By these means, Middleton insinuates how the syphilitic, surfeited body can have a disastrous influence on the head of the commonwealth, eventually leading to the malady of the whole country.
