초록

This paper analyzes Aimé Césaire’s play, A Tempest, as a postcolonial reinterpretation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Césaire explores the complex power dynamics between the colonizer and the colonized, focusing on the conflict between Prospero and Caliban to reveal the inherent instability of power. While Prospero exerts his authority as a colonial ruler, his oppressive actions ultimately undermine his identity, and lead to his isolation. In contrast, Caliban is redefined not merely as a subordinate but as a symbol of resistance, who strives to reclaim his identity and to achieve freedom through the language imposed by Prospero. The element of irony plays a crucial role in elucidating the intricate dynamics of power and resistance in the play. In this regard, Prospero’s misuse of power paradoxically creates a situation in which he becomes increasingly vulnerable and insecure. This paradox enhances Césaire's political message, deepening the critique of colonial oppression.

Abstract

The element of irony plays a crucial role in elucidating the intricate dynamics of power and resistance in the play. In this regard, Prospero’s misuse of power paradoxically creates a situation in which he becomes increasingly vulnerable and insecure. This paradox enhances Césaire's political message, deepening the critique of colonial oppression.
