영웅 관점으로 본 송미경 『바느질 소녀』의 캐릭터 형상화 방식과 의미 연구

이 논문은 송미경 장편동화 『바느질 소녀』를 연구 대상으로 삼고, 주 인물인 ‘거지소녀’의 캐릭터 형상화 방식과 서사적 의미를 고찰하고 있다. 송미경의 동화는 환상성, 그로테스크, 불화, 반어 등의 미학적 문법을 가졌다고 평가받는다. 한국 현대 동화문학에 송미경 동화의 자리가 분명한 편이지만 아직까지 송미경 장편동화 속 주 인물을 대상으로 인물 속성과 표현양상을 성찰하는 질문을 던진 논문은 없었다. 이에 송미경 동화의 세계를 더 면밀히 살펴보기 위한 한 면면으로서 『바느질 소녀』에서 마법을 부릴 줄 아는 주 인물 ‘거지소녀’를 영웅의 관점으로 캐릭터 특성과 의미를 살폈다. 거지소녀는 다치고 훼손되고 망가진 것들을 회복하는 바느질 능력으로 주변의 소외된 자와 인간의 이기로 피해를 입은 동물들을 돕는다. 거지소녀가 지니고 있는 바느질이라는 마법은 코드(끈)의 상징을 토대로 논의할 수 있다. 거지소녀가 바느질을 할 때 사용하는 빨간실을 탯줄 의미와 함께 삼신할머니로 대변되는 창조여신을 언급하여 함께 탐구하였다. 거지소녀가 주변인물을 통해 줄넘기를 시도하는 것 역시 고립되었던 영웅이 한 단계 더 성장하고 변모하는 한 형태로 이해할 수 있다. 거지소녀가 행한 선한 행동들은 소외된 어린이였던 ‘수목이’를 구원하는 한편, 새 영웅의 탄생까지 가늠하게 한다. 서로를 의지하며 성장하는 어린이들의 이야기는 아동문학의 효용과 그 가치를 낙관적으로 조망하게 한다.
Abstract
This paper focuses on the full-length fairy tale Sewing Girl by Song Mi-kyung, exploring the methods of character shaping and the narrative significance of the main character, the 'Beggar Girl.' Song Mi-kyung's fairy tale is characterized by aesthetics such as fantasy, grotesqueness, discord, and irony, earning recognition for its literary quality. While Song Mi-kyung's fairy tales hold a distinct place in modern Korean fairy tale literature, there has not been a paper examining the character attributes and expression patterns of the main characters in her full-length fairy tales. Consequently, this study aims to scrutinize Song Mi-kyung's fairy tales as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of the world. Specifically, it delves into the character traits and significance of the main character, the 'Beggar Girl,' who possesses magical abilities in Sewing Girl, from the perspective of a female hero. The beggar girl, skilled in sewing, restores things that are damaged, broken, or injured. Through her sewing prowess, she aids the less fortunate and animals harmed by human selfishness. The magical aspect of sewing that the beggar girl wields is analyzed through the symbolism of the cord (string) she uses in her sewing. The meaning of the red thread, akin to an umbilical cord, is explored in connection with the Goddess of Creation, represented by Grandmother Samsin. The beggar girl's act of jumping rope through people around her is interpreted as a form of growth and transformation for the isolated hero. The benevolent actions of the beggar girl not only rescue the neglected child 'Soomoki' but also contribute to the emergence of a new hero. The narrative of children growing up and relying on each other provides an optimistic perspective on the utility and value of children's literature, offering a unique insight into the storyline.
