Abstract
This study aims to analyze the modes of aesthetic resistance manifested through the act of reading faces in picture books and to clarify their educational implications. Based on a theoretical inquiry into facial aesthetics, the study closely examines how faces in the picture book Those Dreams engage with readers to enact aesthetic resistance. The analysis reveals three primary modes of resistance. First, faces engage in ‘reader-spectatorship’ by having characters directly gaze at the reader, thereby transforming the reader into an agent of active interaction. Second, faces evoke punctum by merging with the reader's personal experiences, prompting intense emotional responses and ethical reflection. Third, picture books counter faceless grand narratives by foregrounding the faces of marginalized individuals and highlighting their micro-narratives, resisting dominant imperial discourses. Reading faces in picture books carries significant educational meaning. First, it transcends the limits of language, enabling aesthetic solidarity through face-to-face encounters between readers and characters. Second, it encourages readers to reevaluate their worldviews and engage in ethical questioning. Third, it functions as a critical educational practice by restoring the agency of those previously spoken-for, dismantling hierarchical divisions, and fostering communal solidarity.
