Abstract

There is close relation between history and literature. For a long time history was a branch of literature. Also historical material has been much of service for literary creation. It was not until the end of the eighteenth century that history came to appear as something distinct from literature. History seek for the objective writing of the past events. But, if this is plausible as a characterization of the explanatory effect of historical narrative, it tell us something important about the mimetic aspect of historical narratives. On the contrary literature can depict the historical events with verisimilitude. Toji succeed in endowing sets of past events with historical truthfulness by exploiting the metaphorical similarities between sets of real events and depiction of individual life. Therefore we search for the methodology to study Toji in microstoria and new cultural histoy. For our understanding of fiction needs the contrast with history as much as our understanding of history needs the contrast with fiction.
