Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of Icheon Turtle Play of Gyeonggi-do carrying our unique folk songs, dances, beats, plays, and lifestyles, based on which to propose ways to develop the Korean folk dance moving forward. As a research method, we try to extract the characteristics of the Icheon Tortoise play in Gyeonggi - do using the cultural layer difference method which is classified according to the stratified structure. The characteristics of the Icheon Turtle Play of Gyeonggi-do derived from this study are as follows. First, locality means that the unique customs and culture of Icheon of Gyeonggi-do where the natural environment and lifestyles of the Icheon area in Gyeonggi-do have been formed are integrated into the turtle play. Second, commonality means the community awareness and locality of local people who cooperate and communicate with each other for the common work of the town are contained. Third, integratedness means that various elements contained in the turtle play are implied and integrated. Accordingly, this study aims to preserve and discover our traditional cultural heritage as a cornerstone for developing the Korean folk dance through the Icheon Turtle Play of Gyeonggi-do. In addition, as it will be a very important material in terms of social, artistic, and educational aspects along with the appropriate perception of the Korean folk dance, which is our culture and history, and the Korean folk dance will be developed increasingly moving forward.
