Abstract

This study discusses the life and the world of dance of Tae Myung-jun, the first artistic-talent holder of Suyeong Yaryu Suyangban (primary nobleman) Dance as well as his achievement in passing down the traditional legacy to the next generation. The study has been conducted based on preceding academic literatures, images and conversations among the old folks of the Suyeong Yaryu Conservation Association and has found the life and artistic activities of Tae Myung-jun in three different stages in time. Suyangban Dance features Dutbaegi dance and Baegim dance, which are frequently shown in Suyeong Yaryu and is considered one of the most stylist dances although it appears rather rough and rustic with relatively little addition of complicated techniques. He emphasized the importance of constant practice and costume as an accomplishment of Yangbang Dance as well as a flexible movement of head and neck while wearing a mask in his teachings. Last but not the least, Tae Myung-jun has made two tangible accomplishments: 1. contributed to the successfully restoration and designation of Suyeong Yaryu as a cultural asset, 2. established the dance movement of Suyangban Dance that is still being passed down and performed today. 3 established the Suyeong Folklore Conservation Association with relentless efforts to pass down the Suyangban Dance and to foster and train disciples.
