Abstract
This paper analyses split ratings in the Korean bond market, based on the bond rating data conducted by Korean credit rating agencies. Information asymmetry and/or difficulties in bond rating may disturb the exact bond rating of Korean credit rating agencies. Also the incentive structure of agencies can distort the true credit rating. The empirical results are as follows. First, split bond ratings are caused by the incentives of credit rating agencies, rather than by information asymmetry. In addition, the degree of split bond ratings is related with both information asymmetry factors and the incentive structure of rating agencies. Therefore split ratings in the Korean bond market result partially from the opacity in bond rating process and partly from the conflict of interest of the credit rating agencies.
