Abstract

This paper provides an empirical analysis of the factors influencing Korean firms' choice between wholly owned subsidiaries(WOS) and Joint Ventures(JVs) in Eastern Europe. A firms' choice between WOS and JV in Eastern Europe is subject to various firm specific and market specific influences. This study draws the transaction cost economies, the bargaining power, and the behavioral approach to identify and measures some of these influences.A logistic regression model is applied to examine the influences of the independent factors on the Korean firms choice of subsidiaries' ownership. The result of the analysis shows that Korean firms characterized by firm-specific knowledge, firm size, accessibility to EU market, relative manufacturing cost, and contractual risk of host countries are likely to choose WOS in Eastern Europe.
