Abstract
This study analyzed the topological structure of intermediate GVC trade networks and the brokerage role at the countries and sector levels using the decomposition of GDP and social network analysis methodology. As a result of analyzing the topological characteristics of GVC ITN through complex system network theory, intermediate GVC ITN shows the property of scale-free network in that disassortive network and degree distribution represent power law distribution. In addition, a dynamic comparative analysis of the GVC and regional value chains’ ITN structures revealed that the GVC and regional value chains are in a mutually complementary relationship. In addition, as a result of analyzing the impact of GVC ITN's relationship on centrality using power centrality measures, it was found that when network relations switch to negative competitive relations, the centrality of small open economies such as Korea’s low-tech manufacturing and service industries declines the most. Despite the spread of protectionist trade policies since 2018, no topological changes have been observed in the intermediate GVC ITN at the global network level. However, due to the digitalization of the economy, the increased role of high-value-added services, and the spread of reshoring, the GVC is highly likely to be restructured in various forms. Furthermore, in terms of network relationship characteristics, more careful attention should be paid to establishing relationships with major trading partners and emerging markets.
