Abstract

This study explores the philosophical background of John Cage's chance music. In the early 1950's, Cage introduced the chance music with the philosophical project of “liberating music” from the previous musical system controlled by composers. By eliminating composer's intention,he attempted to liberate musicians and sound from composer's oppression and the composer himself from his own ego. He claimed that his idea is based on the East Asian philosophy. Since then, "East Asian Philosophy” has become a signifier symbolizing his chance music in the history of Western music. However, the view that the chance music is based on East Asian philosophy overlooks the fundamental differences between the philosophy of East Asia and that of Cage. Cage’s chance operation aimed at eliminating concepts, so that he could be free from his own ego. However, it was more of the suppression of consciousness rather than liberation from his ego. In his chance music, Zen Buddhism and I-Ching were distorted to the extent that their original meanings and intentions are hardly recognized. Although both aim to transcend the limitations of one's ego or consciousness, they are not denying empirical ego, based on our daily lives or repressing consciousness. Hence, Zen Buddhism and I-ching are scarcely related to Cage's non-intentionality. In conclusion, East Asian philosophy was exploited by Westerners whose intention was to break away from the tradition of European music. The philosophy of chance music is based on Orientalism rather than East Asian philosophy despite his sincere concentration on it.
