소리와 기보체계 간의 경계 또는 관계에 대하여 : 음악의 문자학을 위한 기초적 고찰

이 글은 일종의 음악적 ‘기호’임에도 불구하고 최근에야 학계의 집중적 주목을 받게 된 ‘기보체계’의 본질적 성격, 그리고 소리와 기보체계 간의 경계 또는 관계에 대한 몇 가지 논제를 통하여음악의 문자학 연구를 향한 토대를 마련하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 음성언어와 문자언어의 관계는 음악의 소리와 기보의 관계와 유사성을 띠며, 이는 언어의 문자학적 접근이 음악의 기보연구에 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 엿보게 한다. 언어의 문자학에서 연구되는 세부분야 중 ‘음소와 문자소의 관계’에 대한 연구나 ‘문자체계의 내적 구조’에 대한 연구는음악적 문자학의 연구주제로도 적용 가능할 것으로 보이기에, 본 논문에서는 ‘기보체계의 본질적성격’과 ‘소리와 기보체계 간의 경계 또는 관계’에 대한 몇 가지 논제를 살펴보고 제언한다. 이를위해 우선 언어의 문자학과 기보연구의 현황을 간략히 소개한 후, 기보 관련 선행연구들에서 아직 본격적으로 논의되지 않은 기보의 양가성, 음악적 음소와 문자소, 기보의 규정적 성격과 기술적 성격, 기호학의 기호⋅상징⋅아이콘⋅인덱스 개념과 기보, 그리고 기보의 지시적 성격과 함축적 성격에 대해 논의한다. 이 글이 더욱 다양한 후속 논의들을 향한 출발점이 되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to explore the structure and nature of musical notation which has only recently received extensive academic attention despite its status as a musical ‘sign.’ Previous research on notation has mostly focused on the history of music notation or features of notation of particular periods or instruments. That the relation of spoken and written language resembles that of musical sound and notation suggests the possibility of applying the graphemic study in linguistics to the discussion of musical graphemics. As a preliminary study of musical graphemics, this paper seeks to examine musical notations focusing on ambivalence of notation, musical phoneme and grapheme, relations between various elements of notation and ‘sign, symbol, icon, index’ in terms of Saussure and Peirce, prescriptive and descriptive notation, and denotative and connotative quality of notation.
