Abstract
Conceived as a preliminary study of Johann Sebastian Bach's temporal and notational practice, this paper surveys the most fundamental treatises of the early part of 18th century Germany, discussing and prescribing the temporal as well as notational practice of the time. Through a close reading of the treatises, this paper attempts to illustrate various ways in which the important aspects of the mensural tradition codified by Michael Praetorius' treatise, Syntagma Musicum, was carried over to the early part of the 18th century. This paper will show that the treatises under consideration including Johann Mattheson's Das new-eroeffnete Orchestre and Johann Phillip Kirnberger's The Art of Strict Musical Composition all reflect, directly or indirectly, traditions of the mensuration system.
