본 논문은 쇼스타코비치의 《새로운 바빌론》에 나타난 그의 음악 특징들을 연구하고 영화음악 작곡가로서의 쇼스타코비치를 재조명하고자 하였다. 《새로운 바빌론》은 그의 첫영화음악 작품이자 20세기 초 러시아 무성영화음악에 새로운 방향을 제시하는 모델이 되었다. 그는 젊은 시절 영화관에서 쌓은 피아노 연주 경험을 바탕으로 영화음악 작곡에 본격적인 행보를 보였다. 쇼스타코비치는 영화와 음악의 관계를 간과하지 않으면서도 음악이 영화에서 독자적인 역할을 수행할 수 있는 구조와 기술을 채용한다. 음악의 지속성, 대조의 원칙, 음악적 몽타주와 인용 기법, 그로테스크한 오케스트라의 연출 등 다양한 기법을 통해 단순히삽입되거나 반주되는 영화음악에서 벗어났다. 특히 이 작품에는 그가 다른 장르에서 보여준춤곡의 사용, 패러디 및 풍자, 오케스트라 음악의 내러티브 성격 등 초기 음악 특징들이 고스란히 담겨있어서 쇼스타코비치 영화음악의 탁월한 극적 연출을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate the musical features of Shostakovich’s New Babylon and to examine him as a film composer. New Babylon is his first film score for the silent film directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg and shows a new model for Russian film music. He started his career as a film composer based on his experience in movie theater. The composer did not overlook the mutual understanding between film and music and yet stressed the independent role of music in film at the same time. Shostakovich displayed various musical techniques such as the musical continuity, principle of contrast, musical montage and quotation and grotesque orchestration, and in these ways, he tried to avoid illustrating music. This film score especially focuses on the musical and dramatic features that appear in his early orchestral genres.
