Abstract

Igor Stravinsky composed the Three Japanese Lyrics (1912-13), set to Japanese haiku, by translating his artistic inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints into what he called “two-dimensional music.” Although this composition was so important as it made him to detour during his busy years with the composition of the Rite of Spring (1911-13), the Three Japanese Lyrics has been simply regarded as Stravinsky’s temporary deviation to engage with Parisian Japonisme. Also, analytical studies have largely avoided the Three Japanese Lyrics because it apparently does not fit within Stravinsky’s “Russian period,” characterized by vertical blocks and horizontal layers. Superficially, the Three Japanese Lyrics shares similarities with his earlier song cycle Two Poems of Konstantin Bal’mont (1911) that I regard as an example of “cubist music.” By comparing the structures of the two song cycles, I found two-dimensional characteristics from both limited blocks and layers and pitch-class choices of the Three Japanese Lyrics. Consequently, the concept of “two-dimensional music” is seminal in understanding the structure and aesthetics of Stravinsky’s music.
