Abstract

This paper compares Milton Friedman’s monetary theory and Friedrich Hayek’s monetary theory. These two famous scholars emphasized the danger of the interventions of both the monetary authority and the governments, but they were different in explaining the propagation mechanisms of intervention shocks. M. Friedman maintained the argument that the economy would recover toward the equilibrium without the changes in the relative prices, meaning that the monetary shocks did not result in the real consequences. Instead, F. Hayek strongly argued that the monetary shock would have real effect, which resulted from the disequilibrium between the investment and the savings in the economy. In this sense, F. Hayek followed the Wicksell’s connection named by A. Leijonhufvud. While both F. Hayek and J. M. Keynes took the Wicksell’s tradition, F. Hayek emphasized the resource allocation distortion of the government intervention unlike J. M. Keynes. Milton Friedman and his followers took the classical school tradition, and they argued the fact that the economy would stay inside of the corridor even with exogenous shocks. There have been the strong debates between the equilibrium business cycle economists and New Keynesians about this argument. In the long run, however, even New Keynesians’ economy converges toward the equilibrium, so that we call New Keynesians as Friedmanite. From this comparison, this paper contributes to the understanding the differences between Austrian monetary theory and monetarist’s monetary theory.
