Abstract
Outdoor painted sculptures, when continuously exposed to outdoor environments, inevitably suffer damage. To conserve these works, it is common practice to remove the damaged coating layers and repaint them. However, traditional physical and chemical methods for removing these coatings pose a high risk of damaging the underlying material, necessitating the development of new removal techniques. Since the early 2000s, laser cleaning technology has been introduced in the field of cultural heritage conservation, and its applicability to various materials has been studied. Laser cleaning offers the advantage of non-contact, selective removal of the target area. In this study, a Q-Switching Fiber laser was utilized to remove the coating layers from painted sculptures, and the removal effects and surface conditions were compared and analyzed based on variations in power output and overlap rate. High-power settings demonstrated high removal efficiency but resulted in surface discoloration, while low-power settings showed insufficient removal performance without causing discoloration. Additionally, as the overlap rate increased, removal performance improved, butextensive surface discoloration was also observed. Therefore, the study confirms that Fiber laser cleaning can be effectively applied to the conservation of painted sculptures.
